In a recent episode of WSB’s Saturday Morning show “Green and Growing,” Kevin Caldwell, the founder of Caldwell Tree Care, shared valuable insights about the tree care industry in Atlanta. Joined by representatives from Georgians for a Safer Tree Industry (GFASTI), and other leading Arborists, Caldwell highlighted the importance of tree health and safety in the region.

GFASTI, short for Georgians for a Safer Tree Industry, plays a crucial role in advocating for the interests of various stakeholders within the tree care sector. The organization’s primary mission revolves around advocating for legislative changes that benefit both industry professionals and consumers. GFASTI is committed to lobbying efforts that promote safety, professionalism, and industry standards.

The inspiration behind GFASTI’s formation lies in recognizing the inherent risks associated with tree care work. From the dangers of falling timber and operating chainsaws to managing heavy equipment and performing aerial work in densely populated urban areas, tree care professionals face numerous hazards on the job. A study supported by the Georgia Forestry Commission and conducted by the Georgia Arborist Association shed light on the need for enhanced safety measures and professionalism within the industry.

The study revealed compelling statistics, with 69% of surveyed industry members expressing their support for licensing. This demonstrates a clear desire among professionals to establish standardized qualifications and guidelines to ensure safe and competent tree care practices. The study also identified widespread support for safety training initiatives and other markers of professionalism, prompting proactive action from certain members of the Georgia Arborist Association.
