What Do Tree Trimming & Pruning Services Entail?

Tree trimming and pruning are essential practices for maintaining healthy, attractive trees, but they serve distinct purposes. Tree trimming involves the selective removal of overgrown tree branches to enhance their overall appearance and promote better sunlight exposure for surrounding plants.

On the other hand, pruning is more focused on the health of the tree itself, involving the removal of dead or diseased branches to prevent hazards and encourage growth. Both processes are important practices for newly planted trees and mature trees alike.

Tree Growth Cycles & Their Impact

Trees undergo different phases throughout the year, transitioning between periods of dormancy and active growth. Trimming or pruning trees during the wrong time can hinder growth, reduce fruit or flower production, and leave your trees vulnerable to disease.

Late Fall Through Early Spring: The Ideal Season to Prune Trees

For the majority of trees, late winter to early spring is considered the best time for trimming and pruning. During this period, most trees, particularly deciduous trees, are dormant. Without leaves, the tree’s structure is more visible, making it easier to identify broken branches, dead branches, and signs of disease that indicate the need for removal.

Pruning trees during dormancy also minimizes stress and helps them heal more quickly once the active growing season begins. By removing dead or diseased branches during this time, you also prevent the spread of infections, ensuring your tree has a healthy start to the growing season.

Specific Guidelines for Different Tree Types

Deciduous Trees

Deciduous trees, which lose their leaves annually, benefit most from dormant season pruning. This includes popular species like maples, oaks, and elms. Winter pruning works best for deciduous trees because it promotes vigorous spring growth, reduces the risk of pest infestation and disease transmission, and allows for better shaping and structural improvements. However, there are exceptions. Trees that are prone to “bleeding” (excessive sap flow), such as birches and maples, should be pruned in late spring or early summer when in full leaf.

Fruiting Trees

The best time to prune most fruit trees is during late winter, just before spring growth begins. This timing encourages robust fruit production, allows for better shaping of the tree, and reduces the risk of disease transmission. Some fruit trees, like cherry and plum, are susceptible to silver leaf disease and should be pruned in summer when the risk of infection is lower.

Flowering Trees

Tree pruning for flowering species depends on when they bloom. For spring-flowering trees like dogwood and magnolia, it’s best to prune immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year’s buds. Summer-flowering trees such as crape myrtle and vitex should be pruned in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Evergreen Trees

Most evergreen trees require minimal pruning. When necessary, light pruning can be done anytime. However, for major pruning, the timing varies by species. Spruce and fir trees should be pruned in late winter when they are still dormant. Pines are best pruned in early June to early July. Arborvitae and juniper can be pruned from early spring to mid-summer.

Special Circumstances for Trimming Trees

While timing is crucial for routine pruning, there are situations where immediate action is necessary, regardless of the season. Dead branches and diseased branches should be removed as soon as they’re noticed. This practice prevents the spread of disease to healthy parts of the tree, reduces the risk of falling branches, and improves the overall health and appearance of the tree.

Broken branches or those posing a safety risk should also be removed immediately. This includes storm-damaged limbs, branches interfering with power lines, and limbs obstructing visibility on roads or driveways.

Newly planted trees may require some pruning at the time of planting to remove damaged or broken branches, improve the tree’s structure, and balance the crown with the root system.
