What Are Ambrosia Beetles?
Granulate ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera) are small wood-boring insects that target both healthy and stressed trees. These persistent pests earned their name from the ambrosia fungus they carry and cultivate inside their tunnel systems. Unlike other wood-boring insects, the Asian ambrosia beetle doesn't actually eat the wood – instead, they feed on the fungus they introduce to the tree.
These beetles measure only about 2-3 millimeters in length, making them difficult to spot with the naked eye. Female beetles typically initiate the attack, boring into the tree's sapwood to create galleries where they'll lay their eggs. As they work, they produce characteristic frass and boring dust that often appears as thin strands or powder around entry holes. The relationship between the beetle and its fungus is a fascinating but destructive partnership. The adult granulate ambrosia beetle carries fungal spores in special structures in their bodies, deliberately introducing them to new trees as they excavate extensive galleries.
Signs Your Trees Are Under Attack
Detecting an ambrosia beetle attack early can make all the difference in saving your trees. Here are the key indicators that suggest your apparently healthy plants might be hosting these unwanted guests:
• Small, round entry holes (about the size of a toothpick)
• Strings of compacted sawdust protruding from bark
• Wilting or yellowing leaves
• Branch dieback
• Sudden plant collapse
• Visible frass tubes or sawdust around the trunk
• Dark staining around entry holes.
The presence of these symptoms often indicates that female granulate ambrosia beetles have already begun their invasion.
